Maria Magnusdottir - the long version
María Magnúsdóttir was born in Reykjavík, Iceland in 1984. She currently lives in London where she is studying Popular Music composition and production at postgraduate level. She attained her BMus diploma of vocal jazz from The Royal Conservatoire of The Hague in 2015.
María grew up in a farm on the south-west coast of Iceland. There the family had an old organ in the living room. Her first experience of music consisted of figuring out the notes of the old organ and singing along, discovering her musical ear.
She begged her parents to let her study music. For many years she sang in a childrens choir. Finally at the age of 10 she had her first piano lessons and studied piano for a few years. Soon she discovered that singing was really her passion and started studying classical singing in the music school of Garðabær from the age of 13.
There was no return when she discovered jazz and began her jazz singing studies at Tónlistarskóli FÍH in Reykjavík. All the wile singing with Reykjavík Gospel Choir and as a solo artist in Iceland. She graduated from Tónlistarskóli FÍH with a national diploma of jazz singing and as a jazz, pop and rock music teacher in 2008.
María released her first and only album so far in 2009, released exclusively in Iceland under the name Not Your Housewife. On the album are 10 soulful pop and rock songs by Maria. You can listen to the album and buy online here. The album was well received by critics and the title song Not your housewife became a radio hit.
María worked for a while in the music industry in Iceland, singing in weddings, funerals, theatre (Jesus Christ Superstar, Borgarleikhúsið), in TV shows, bars and clubs. She sang as a solo artist, as a jazz singer, with Reykjavík Gospel Choir and with her funk band Mama's Bag. She also taught music and singing lessons in Tónsalir music school and directed two gospel/pop choirs and singing groups.
After a while María felt the hunger of learning more. She started her music studies in The Netherlands in 2011. In The Hague she wrote music constantly, discovering her passion for composition and arranging, singing professionally, teaching children and adults music lessons and playing with her electro pop band Cult of the Secret Samurai, which later developed into Early Late Twenties who released their first EP album in April 2015.
